The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

Under general supervision, the Research Nurse will be responsible for running Endocrine and Diabetes research protocols. Studies include diabetes treatment and technology, treatments for precocious puberty, growth hormone deficiency, short stature, delayed puberty, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Turner syndrome, and potentially other endocrine related studies. Responsibilities include overseeing recruitment of subjects into protocols, screening potential study participants, and informed consent. The Research Nurse will conduct medical record review, telephone contact with participants, blood draws, physical exams, and completing case report forms. This role interacts with the research team, the UCSD Human Subjects Protection Program, and study sponsors, and other research related entities as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing and two (2) years of Pediatrics Clinical Research.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training, plus three (3) years of Pediatric experience.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience and ability to draw blood, start IV lines, and administer injections via all routes.

  • Possess extensive experience in patient care, including assessment, triage, and health education, coupled with a proven ability to accurately collect, record, transcribe, and synthesize clinical data. Adept at managing medical history, vital signs, and coordinating with clinical staff while ensuring patient confidentiality and maintaining professional communication.

  • Understanding the standard instructions patients should receive before tests or procedures. Familiarity with the names, abbreviations, and purposes of different diagnostic tests and procedures, as well as how to properly schedule them and complete the required requisitions and consent forms.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting positively, constructively, and effectively with staff, physicians, patients and the general public.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently coordinate clinical and data activities for the enrollment and retention of patients on clinical trials.

  • Proficient at word processing, spreadsheet, and E-mail with experience producing reports, profiles, correspondence, graphs, and spreadsheets to generate and track required data.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and perform effectively under high workload and frequent interruptions.

  • Demonstrated experience with clinical research activities and guidelines related to consent, ethical conduct and protection of human subjects.

  • Skill and experience reading and interpreting clinical research protocols and research policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience in operation and coordination of clinical trials or studies.

  • Knowledge of and ability to communicate and ensure compliance of current UCSD Medical Center, Rady Children's Hospital, and Research policies and procedures. Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center, JCAHO, and Title XXII hospital licensing regulations.

  • Intermediate skills in using quality assessment and quality improvement methods.

  • Experience in providing care to a broad range patients.

  • A minimum of one (1) or more years of experience in Pediatric Endocrine Clinical Research within the last three (3) years.

  • Experience in clinical research trials that includes patient visits, regulatory and IRB submissions.

  • Experience with EMR and Excel spreadsheets.

  • A minimum of one (1) or more years of experience in working with any of the following studies: diabetes treatment and technology, treatments for precocious puberty, growth hormone deficiency, short stature, delayed puberty, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Turner syndrome, and potentially other endocrine related studies.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Current State of California Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Must have excellent phlebotomy, IV insertion skills.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including occasional early mornings.

  • Must be willing to travel occasionally to attend national meetings.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $123,902 - $173,659 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $59.34 - $83.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
